Redskins sack any comeback

Washington downs Oakland quarterbacks eight times.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Quarterback Jason Campbell was sharp on a dreary day, new starting running back Quinton Ganther scored his first career touchdowns, and the Washington Redskins' fierce pass rush often overwhelmed the Oakland Raiders in a 34-13 victory Sunday afternoon at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

"I just can't tell you how excited I am for our players," Redskins coach Jim Zorn said. "I mean, we left a lot of good players at home, and yet the players who are here have a lot of heart. You could feel the team continuing to stay together."

Campbell continued his strong play in helping the Redskins (4-9) end a losing streak at three games and a road slide at nine games. Ganther led the Redskins with 50 yards on 14 carries and had a pair of one-yard touchdown runs on consecutive possessions early in the fourth to help Washington take command over the Raiders (4-9).

After experiencing many late breakdowns during the last three losses -- including the 33-30 overtime loss in Week 13 to the New Orleans Saints -- Washington's defense impressed in sacking Raiders quarterbacks a season-high eight times. Rookie defensive end/strong-side linebacker Brian Orakpo had four sacks and defensive end Andre Carter contributed two. Backup JaMarcus Russell, who played the second half, was sacked five times and threw an interception.

"Just think about these last few weeks," Zorn said. "It's just been heart-wrenching and gut-wrenching, and yet our players are continuing to push through. Regardless of who we've had, the next guy has stepped up."

New Washington place-kicker Graham Gano converted his two field-goal attempts -- from 46 and 42 yards -- and four point-after attempts as the team scored at least 30 points in consecutive games for the first time under Zorn. Campbell completed 16 of 28 passes for 222 yards with two touchdowns to tight end Fred Davis and no interceptions. He had a 106.5 quarterback rating -- his second straight game with a rating of higher than 106.

After failing to move the ball in the third quarter, the Redskins put together a long drive and extended their lead to 11 points on Ganther's first career touchdown and Gano's successful point-after attempt. Ganther's one-yard run completed a 13-play, 80-yard drive that spanned 6:01 and put the Redskins ahead, 24-13.

On the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing possession, safety LaRon Landry intercepted a pass thrown by Russell, and the Redskins started at the Raiders' 39-yard line after Oakland unsuccessfully challenged the interception ruling on the field. Four plays later, Ganther scored on his second one-yard run in as many drives and the Redskins broke open the game, 31-13.

Raiders starting quarterback Bruce Gradkowski sat out the second half because of a knee injury, and Russell took control of the offense. The ineffective Russell -- the first overall pick in the 2007 draft -- was benched in favor of Gradkowski in November, and many in the small crowd booed when he entered the game in the third quarter. Janikowski capped Russell's first drive with a 54-yard field goal that cut the Redskins' lead to 17-13.

Carter and Orakpo made things difficult for Russell. The productive edge-rushing tandem provided consistent pressure and combined for three sacks in the third.

"I always said [Orakpo] was a double-digit sack guy," Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray said.

With Campbell and Davis teaming on big plays, the Redskins held a 17-10 halftime lead. Campbell and Davis combined on six- and 17-yard touchdown passes, and Gano converted his first field-goal attempt with the Redskins -- from 46 yards -- to provide the Redskins' points in the first 30 minutes.

Campbell passed for 147 yards with the two touchdowns and no interceptions in the first half in compiling a 126.8 rating. His longest gain occurred on a short screen pass to Ganther that resulted in a 42-yard gain.

The Redskins scored the go-ahead touchdown with only 56 seconds remaining in the second quarter on Campbell's 17-yarder to Davis. On the possession, the Redskins gained 30 yards before their first play from scrimmage because the Raiders committed consecutive 15-yard penalties.

Oakland's Gradkowski completed 10 of 18 passes for 153 yards. He injured his knee late in the half while attempting to extend a play.

Running back Darren McFadden had 74 yards on only two receptions while twice beating Landry in coverage. The Redskins limited the Raiders to a 2.8-yard average on 17 rushes in the half.

"I think every coach is keeping his wits about himself and diving in," Zorn said. "You know, I think what you see with our coaching staff, they're all in. Defensively, offensively, special teams, we're all in. There's been no let-off as to how we're preparing."

Notes

Dexter Manley, Ken Harvey and Phillip Daniels also had four sacks in a game for Washington. Raiders safety Michael Huff left in the second quarter with a stinger.
