Wednesday, June 01, 2005PODCAST: Drastic PlasticRoanoke-based musical group Drastic Plastic explains what the heck a "boomwhacker" is, and why it makes a good instrument.
Drastic Plastic is one of Roanoke's most unusual musical ensembles. Using an array of brightly colored "boomwhackers" (that's a technical term, folks), they bang out percussive melodies, playing everything from "Peter Gunn" to "Chopsticks' and a few original pieces. Hailing from Roanoke, Botetourt County and Bassett, the band consists of members Chris Kendrick, Sean Deel, Jeremy Price, Teddy Holcomb, Andy Burnette and Justin Price. Jeremy Price, one of Drastic Plastic's founders, also serves part time in Stomp, a percussion ensemble that's toured around the United States and world. For this week's Podcast, we invited the members into our studio to talk about their craft and perform three songs. For more information, contact Jeremy Price at spockontheplastic@cox.net or Holcomb at tjoel@mac.com. In case you didn't know, we've been doing these podcasts for a little while now. What are they? They're like radio shows in mp3 format. You can right click and hit "save target as" to download them to your computer or mp3 player, or just stream them by hitting the pointy thing in the RealPlayer box above right. If you want to get with the leading edge tech stuff, you can drag the XML button above left onto your news reader. Click here for a photo gallery of Drastic Plastic and their unique instruments.
